Why restore in Ethiopia?

Restoring forests in Ethiopia is important for several reasons:

1. Biodiversity Protection: Ethiopia's forests are home to unique and diverse species, and restoration helps preserve this biodiversity.

2. Climate Change Mitigation: Forests absorb carbon dioxide, contributing to the fight against climate change.

3. Soil Erosion Prevention: Forests prevent soil erosion, crucial in a largely agrarian country like Ethiopia.

4. Water Regulation: Forests play a key role in water cycle regulation, supporting agriculture and water supply.

5. Economic Benefits: Forest resources provide livelihoods for many Ethiopians and contribute to the economy.

6. Cultural and Historical Significance: Ethiopian forests have cultural and historical importance, integral to the identity and heritage of the country.

How we started

Ethiopia's highlands, rich in unique ecological features, face deforestation and environmental degradation due to long-term human occupation, sedentary agriculture, cattle herding, and population pressure.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has practiced forest conservation for centuries in Amhara province, emphasizing spiritual motivations for ecological stewardship. Planta Mi Árbol collaborates with local farmers, community leaders to transform watersheds.

Planta Mi Árbol in Ethiopia:

Planta Mi Árbol launched a pilot program near the upper Blue Nile in Amhara's Andabet woreda.

Empowering Women:

Planta Mi Árbol is developing a curriculum to increase women's involvement, recognizing their crucial role in lifting communities out of poverty.

Where we're working

Planta Mi Árbol's participating communities are located in Andabet, situated within the South Gondar area of the Amhara region. The selection of program placement is determined by various factors, such as our organizational ties with key stakeholders, the assessment of community readiness, and the program's relevance to their needs.
